AI-powered transcription tools are moving beyond scheduled meetings towards increasingly seamless and potentially always-on recording of conversations. While these tools promise convenience and productivity, they also raise fundamental data protection questions when people are captured, transcribed and analysed as part of everyday interactions.
This session explores where the GDPR draws the line. It will examine issues around legal basis, transparency, purpose limitation and data minimisation, as well as the particular challenges posed by bystanders, sensitive information and the further use of transcripts by AI systems. Bringing together legal and supervisory perspectives, the discussion will ask when useful transcription becomes disproportionate surveillance — and what organisations need to consider before deploying these technologies.
