Internal investigations have become a routine part of corporate life, whether to ensure compliance with internal policies or to cooperate with law enforcement agencies. Data protection is a key concern in this field, as the documents and emails under investigation contain personal data. The GDPR unfolds its full range of challenges here – justification of processing, data protection impact assessments, ensuring transparency, etc. All of this in a situation where the assertion of data subjects’ rights or claims for damages poses a latent threat given conflicting interests, and measures by data protection authorities would represent an additional burden. The workshop aims to provide hands-on guidance on the key data protection issues when planning and conducting an internal investigation from a privacy professional’s perspective.
