ePrivacy rules protect against the storage of information, and access to information already stored, in end-users’ terminal equipment. But what if the end-user becomes the terminal equipment? What happens when neurotechnologies collect information directly from the human body, including neural activity itself?
As brain-computer interfaces and other neurotechnologies move from research laboratories into consumer, workplace and healthcare settings, they challenge some of the assumptions underpinning existing privacy frameworks. This workshop explores current developments relating to neurodata, the resulting data protection and cybersecurity challenges, and whether existing legal frameworks provide adequate safeguards or whether new approaches to protecting mental and bodily privacy will be needed.
